Blue Circle Island Bird Count
23-8-07

Pictured below is Lloyd McInally, Lafarge’s project manager for the Magheramorne project, helping out in May with the annual RSPB bird count on Blue Circle Island in Larne Lough.  Lloyd was on the island, half mile offshore from Magheramorne Works, to discuss the possibility with the RSPB of Lafarge providing concrete nesting boxes for some of the 2,000 odd sea birds that nest each spring on the island, including the relatively rare Roseate Tern.

The man-made island was constructed in the 1970s, using material from the sea bed dredged to keep open the channel to the quay at Magheramorne Works, and was then leased to the RSPB.

The RSPB has commented favourably upon our planning application for the redevelopment of the Works and Quarry site and is likely to be involved in helping to develop plans for the proposed nature conservation areas.
