THE PRESENT

The Magheramorne Works site covers 153 hectares, about the size of 220 football pitches. The landholding divides into three parts: the old Works area, the disused quarry and the peninsula.

THE PENINSULA

The limestone in the quarry lay beneath basalt. This had to be removed in order to excavate the limestone. Much of this basalt was placed in Larne Lough, creating a new, one-mile long ‘peninsula’. The peninsula enjoys views over the lough to Islandmagee and provides a vantage point from which the birdlife in the lough can be studied.

THE WORKS AREA

Here, on 15 hectares of land, some of the old industrial buildings remain standing overlooking the lough. The old jetty, from which cement was once exported by boat, also remains in place.

THE QUARRY

The quarry occupies just under a half of the overall site. Its enormous steep-sided cliffs create a magnificent, amphitheatre-like setting. Two fresh-water lakes – one the size of seven football pitches – are found within the quarry.
